Observations: when you beat the Guardian, you get some dialogue and the sex scene. If you beat the Guardian again (grinding for souls like I did), the dialogue and 'new skill acquired' keeps popping up. This should be a one-time-only thing. Furthermore, I was able to grind to 1000 souls by grinding the Guardian. This allowed me to pick the 1000 soul skill and, immediately after that, pick the other 1000 soul skill. Then I saw tester test test stuff for further skills. After getting the 1000 soul skills (for free) I didn't see them in my skill list.

Before the Mask starts shooting flames at the ground, move (or dash) to the right side of the screen.

Jump into the air and when you reach the peak of the jump, hold down block. Once block has been activated, hold down your attack button (while continuing to hold down block) and hold down the left button. You should automatically dash left. Since you are holding down the block button, you will automatically block.

Continue to hold down block and attack, but release the left button (once you have started blocking) and hold down the right button. Practice this technique before you enter the arena and you should succeed. (Yes, that is the way you are supposed to beat the Mask and yes, it will take some practice to use this technique).
